An obvious metaphor, but...

In Monopoly, in order to win, there will come a point where you have to be land-rich and money-poor. Perhaps mortgaging all your properties in order to pay your rent, taxes, or to buy Boardwalk. Tonight, after kicking my parent's asses at Monopoly, I got to thinking how much investing in an education is like investing in real estate. Any maybe, one day, I'll have some squishy career, where people will land in my office and pay me 300 bucks an hour to do whatever, and then I'll end up clawing my way out of debt and into the black. Maybe I'll even end up with money to buy RRSP's and a house and a car and raise babies and all those other North American dreams. And then, I'll look back on these days of being 15 grand in debt, and I'll pat myself on the back for my patience.

Sometimes though, it's tempting to kiss Boardwalk goodbye, invest in Marvin Gardens and hope for the best.

But we all know you rarely win Monopoly that way.

Patience, puppet, patience.
