Tonight I got to see another great amazing friend that I haven't seen since August... and on the drive home I hit a deer.
WHY WHY WHY?
I realise that this is a common occurance where I live, but it has never happened to me. I've never even had a close call. They always just stare at my car. They never RUN IN FRONT OF IT.
In fact, this deer was stupid. It didn't even run in front of me. It just run smack into my driver's side door. Scared the shit out of me.
I hope it's all right.
I didn't go back and check. It happened two minutes from my house so I was hoping my parents would go back with me. But they were quick to point out (and they were right) that there would be nothing we could do anyway. Thanks to the new firearm registration laws we were forced to get rid of our guns, so it's not like we could help it anyway. Further, it was 1am, and it's a small town, so there was no one we could call. It didn't even leave a mark on the side of the car, and it didn't go under my tires, so I'm hoping it just got stunned and ran away. Hoping.
I feel so helpless about it. Poor thing.
They are so overpopulated here that it seems almost out of control. I must have seen about 15 of them on the drive home tonight. I'm not about to say "if only we weren't an island and had more cougars and bears to kill them off" or anything, but between the lack of natural predators and the lack of hunting, we really have an unsafe number of them. So much potential for car accidents.
There are actually deer here that will come when called. You can feed them out of the palm of your hand. It's so strange... tame deer. They are supposed to be wild animals, yet you can almost pet these ones. Sort of cool I guess, but I can't help feeling that there are limits in nature for a reason, and humans are constantly violating them. We have this whole food chain thing going on. We keep messing it up.
I don't mean to sound all depressed about this vacation or anything. It's actually going quite well. I spent the day making Christmas cookies and homemade candy with Darcy. We bicker like sisters, we do...
K: now we need to stir it like this....
D: I want to stir!
K: okay, fine. now we need to add the flour...
D: I want to add the flour!
K: jesus, alright.
(Darcy adds flour)
K: okay, now we have to put the dough in this pan...
D: I want to put the dough in the pan!
K: dammit, shut up!
D: you shut up!
K: I feel like you're the sister I never had...
D: I feel like you're the sister I never wanted in the first place.
(laughter)
